On Friday the 8th August, NEWSAR welcomed 40 young people from 1st Saltney Ferry Scouts to our base.
They were keen to find out what it is like to be a member of a Mountain Rescue Team and understand what our volunteer members do for the community. After a brief introduction by Team Leader Chris, the Scouts and their leaders split into four groups. They were “shown the ropes” by Team Member Mark, who demonstrated some useful knots (always good for Scouts!) and then built a system for an abseil, although for the purpose of this demonstration Mark very wisely chose level grounds. They were shown a set of personal water rescue kit by Team Member Richie, who, amongst other things, explained why we use dry suits instead of wet suits. Team Leader Chris introduced the groups to personal basic hill kit while Team Members Craig and Dylan demonstrated the facilities of our mobile control vehicle and gave them an overview of some of the medical equipment we use.
We hope to have inspired some of our very attentive visitors to consider joining a Mountain Rescue Team in the future and say thanks very much for coming to visit us.
